Wanting to buy stuff is like sex?
I admit there are times when I’m smitten by a new product, or see something in a store I ‘must’ have. As a splurger, I more often than not succumb to the desire and drag out my wallet (or credit card) and make the purchase.
Leo Babauta over at mnmlist.com has described this as ‘the lust for new things‘.
“The key is to be aware of it. Notice the excitement, the raised heartbeat, the shallow breathing, the adrenaline rush that comes with the lust over a product. Notice the symptoms are very much like sexual arousal? It’s practically the same — and just like when we’re sexually aroused, the rational part of our brains shut down.”
That’s it! My rational brain shuts down and I suddenly find myself poor at the end of the week.
So as much as I struggle to get my head around the concept of minimalism, Leo makes some great points and suggestions in this article. Ashley reckons I should give more thought to “the culture of more, of bigger, of consumption” and read mnmlist.com more often.
Maybe she’s right…
