Do interesting (money) things

Written By: Teen Money Expert Stuart Fleming on September 16, 2009

One of the blogs I enjoy reading is called Zen Habits by Leo Babauta. In the recent ‘Do Interesting Things’ post, he explained…

“People are empowered to express themselves, to create, to become a part of a global conversation and transformation, in a way that has never existed before. What will you do with that? What will your place be in this new, interesting world? Will you have a voice? Will you be a creator, or just a consumer?”

…and then he lists dozens of interesting things you could do. Quite inspiring really!

So with my thoughts sufficiently provoked, here’s my list of interesting (money-related) things:

Trash all the old receipts from your wallet or purse. Calculate how much you spend on monthly bank charges. Consider how it would feel not to have a credit card. Sell two unwanted items. Google how much your country spent on international aid last year. Donate the clothes you haven’t worn for twelve months. Look behind the couch cushions for coins. Check out how much your dream holiday would cost. Learn the value of houses in your neighbourhood. Search for an online money management system. Decide which charity to support for the next year. Teach someone how to write a personal cheque. Update (or create) your will. Toss a coin 100 times - how many heads/tails? Pretend to buy a company’s publicly-traded stock and watch it rise/fall for a month. List your possessions and check you have the right insurance policy. Pledge to take control of your money.

Ready? Set? Go.

    Hello Streetwise Mike,
Those are some brilliant money saving tips/ideas for teens. Money Management is a very important skill to learn. I work on behalf Neon MasterCard Prepaid Card, which is designed to for teens to use. It is one of the safer ways for teenagers to spend, with no chance of going overdrawn and a bar on adult store spending.

It also allows your teenager to earn cash back when they shop at over 1000 of their favourite stores online.
